Hard to believe that plans to build the first Pickleball indoor facility began in 2016. The 16 world-class outdoor courts at Pine Nursery started the pickleball craze in Bend. Yet, the need for an indoor facility to use during the winter season needed to be addressed. This is when Werner Zehnder with his interest in pickleball, and Butch Roberts with his desire to build a Trampoline Park teamed up. Thanks to these two men, every pickleballer’s dream for a state-of-the-art indoor facility and training academy came to fruition. The Zone – inclusive of Pickleball Zone Bend and Trampoline Zone Bend – opened its doors on October 29th, 2018. This 55,000 square foot facility offers an adventure park on the ground level, and 8 dedicated Pickleball courts on the 3rd floor. The 4th floor lounge adds comfort and perhaps the best view in town over 11 mountain peaks.

The business model for the Pickleball Zone is a balance of Memberships as well as organized play sessions and court rental for the public. In addition, lessons, clinics, and camps are offered through our Oregon Pickleball Academy.

In 2024, Linda Thorsen and Matt Wessels, who have been with Werner from day one, became partners in the Pickleball Zone. In 2025, two new partners, Chris Vacca and Conor Carlsen, joined the team.
